Snow & Glacier Division (S&GD)
The Snow and Glacier Division is the newest and smallest division of DHMS formed only in the beginning of 2013. The division is responsible for studying the snow and glaciers of the country through setting up of field measurement systems and remote sensing techniques. The reports, data and services shall be provided to others for understanding the complete hydrological system of Bhutan and to ascertain climate change impacts on the Himalayas of Bhutan.
Glacier Mass Balance System of measuring the Glaciers and their retreat rates; snow surveys and snow pack measurements to find out snow variations across regions and time period, and installation for permanent monitoring of snow and glacier stations are some of the proposed activities by the division.
Several Research and collaboration Projects on Snow and Glaciers are also currently implemented by the Department that are on the Projects page
